Oran McConville Death

RATHFRILAND, NORTHERN IRELAND — The community of Rathfriland is reeling from the tragic and sudden loss of 14-year-old Oran McConville, a beloved young man who touched lives on and off the pitch. Oran passed away following a devastating accident in Hilltown, leaving behind a heartbroken family, countless friends, and two close-knit communities — Milestone Rathfriland and Drumgath GAC — united in grief.

Oran was not only a rising star in local Gaelic football, proudly representing Drumgath GAC at U14 and U16 levels, but also a cherished member of the team at Milestone Rathfriland, where he began working in June 2022. Despite his young age, Oran brought with him a work ethic and spirit that endeared him to all. Colleagues remember him as kind, driven, funny, and full of life — someone whose smile lit up every room and whose presence could lift even the heaviest of days.

“It is with deep sadness that we share the heartbreaking news of the sudden passing of our dear work colleague and friend, Oran McConville,” Milestone stated in a tribute. “Oran was full of talent, kindness, and an infectious positivity that touched everyone who had the pleasure of working with him. Though his time with us was far too short, he made a lasting impact both professionally and personally.”

Oran’s passing is particularly difficult for the team at Milestone, as his mother Amanda is a much-loved and long-standing member of the staff, and his older brother Shea also previously worked there. Their Milestone family has expressed their deepest sympathies to Amanda, Shea, and the wider McConville family.

“Our heartfelt condolences go out to Amanda and Shea,” the tribute continued. “We are keeping them, and all of Oran’s family and friends, in our thoughts during this incredibly difficult time.”

Oran’s legacy also lives on through his passion for Gaelic football. At Drumgath GAC, he was known not just for his skills on the field, but for the joy, enthusiasm, and sportsmanship he brought to every match and training session. Teammates, coaches, and supporters have all spoken of a young man who gave his all, encouraged others, and made football not just a game, but a joy to play and watch.

The club issued their own statement expressing sorrow:
“Oran was a proud Drumgath player, representing the club with heart and pride. He was a key part of our U14 and U16 squads, and his loss is immeasurable. The thoughts and prayers of the entire Drumgath family are with Amanda, Shea, and all of Oran’s loved ones. He will be remembered fondly as a spirited young Gael who left his mark on every one of us.”

As tributes continue to pour in, from friends, schoolmates, teammates, and coworkers, one thing is clear — Oran McConville was a remarkable young man whose absence will be deeply felt across the Rathfriland and Hilltown communities.

Though his life was heartbreakingly short, the light Oran brought into the lives of those who knew him will continue to shine. His name will be remembered in locker rooms, on football pitches, in the aisles of Milestone, and in the hearts of everyone privileged to call him a friend, teammate, colleague, or family.
