Windsor, ON — The École secondaire catholique l’Essor community is mourning the sudden and heartbreaking loss of longtime teacher, mentor, and coach Jean Sauvé, who passed away unexpectedly this week. A beloved figure within the school for more than three decades, Sauvé’s legacy is one of passion, leadership, and unwavering dedication to his students and colleagues.
Known affectionately to many as “Johnny Computer,” Jean Sauvé was more than just an educator — he was a pillar of l’Essor’s identity. His commitment to academic excellence, team spirit, and cultural pride left a profound and lasting impact on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
Sauvé served as a teacher at École secondaire catholique l’Essor for over 30 years, inspiring generations of students with his intellect, humor, and unique ability to connect inside and outside the classroom. He was particularly revered for his coaching role with the Hydrodynamic Eagles, where he built a powerhouse program that consistently competed at the provincial level. Under his guidance, the Eagles flourished — not just as athletes, but as confident, team-minded individuals. His pride in their successes, both big and small, was evident in everything he did.
“Jean was more than just a coach; he was a mentor, a motivator, and a father figure to many of his students,” said a colleague from l’Essor. “He pushed everyone to be their best and believed in them, even when they didn’t believe in themselves.”
Fluently proud of his Francophone heritage, Sauvé was a champion of French-language education and culture in Ontario. He instilled in his students a sense of pride in their identity and heritage, fostering a vibrant and inclusive learning environment where culture was celebrated, not just taught.
His passing has sent ripples through the school and local community. Tributes from past students, fellow educators, and athletes have poured in, describing a man who never stopped giving, never stopped encouraging, and never stopped caring.
Jean Sauvé leaves behind his cherished family, including two children who were the light of his life. As the school and community come to terms with this sudden loss, the thoughts and prayers of all who knew him are with his loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.
A memorial service is expected to be announced in the coming days, giving the school community and broader Windsor region a chance to honor and remember a man who gave so much of himself to others.
